Callaway Mum

U.S. Rep. Howard H. (Bo) Callaway, though admittedly impressed by a wild, washtub beating, placard-waving demonstration urging him to do so, declined again at Friday’s opening session of the state Republican convention to say that he will carry the GOP banner into this year’s governor’s race.

Selma Race

More than 100 Negroes marched on the Dallas County Courthouse Friday to protest a legal action that kept segregationist Jim Clark in the running against a racial moderate who opposed him in a Democratic primary battle for sheriff. First indications following last Tuesday’s election were that former Selma police chief Wilson Baker, an acknowledged moderate in racial affairs, had gained a majority of votes against his three rivals, including Clark, the incumbent.

Flag Case

A young Negro convicted of defiling the U.S. and Georgia flags during a wild civil rights protest faces sentencing Monday, with the maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and a year’s imprisonment. A biracial Superior Court jury returned two verdicts of guilty Friday against Rufus Hinton, 19, on the misdemeanor convictions.
