Gov. Talmadge?
Sen. Herman E. Talmadge, D-Ga., in a major political surprise jumped into the Georgia governor’s race today minutes after a prime Democratic contender, Ernest Vandiver, stepped aside because of heart illness. Twin announcements by Talmadge, twice governor, and Vandiver, who has served one term, sent Georgia politics reeling and apparently weakened Republican hopes of capturing the governor’s office this year.
St. Elmo Concerns
A large delegation from the St. Elmo neighborhood was expected to object today to proposed development of the former Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home site into two tracts-one for a psychiatric clinic and the other for an apartment complex.
Bo Blames D.C.
The decision to run U.S. Sen. Herman Talmadge, D-Ga., for the Democratic nomination of governor in Georgia was conceived in the White House, Rep. Howard H. Callaway, R-Ga., said today.
