Policewoman in PC
Phenix City Police Chief Tom Scroggins said Mrs. Virginia McConnell, the first policewoman ever employed by the city, would begin work today. Mrs. McConnell was in the Women’s Army Corps for two years, and has been in police work for the last three years. Chief Scroggins said Mrs. McConnell would be assigned to the detective division.
Urban Renewal
The Housing Authority of Columbus today indicated it may be late summer before all sales of lots are closed out in Theo McGee Park-Columbus’ first urban renewal area. The board today deferred action on a request by Columbus businessman Bill Heard to allow him to cancel a contract to purchase a large lot in McGee Park without forfeiting his $7,325 deposit.

Hank Aaron, the Atlanta Braves’ slugging right fielder who’s leading the major leagues in home runs and runs batted in, just missed tying the National League consecutive hit record of 10. Aaron slammed eight consecutive hits before Cub right-hander Ernie Broglio struck him out Sunday.
