Medicare went into effect today, and 43 patients at The Medical Center in Columbus were among the first persons in the nation to take advantage of the federal government’s health insurance program.

Post Work

A $3.7 million Department of the Army loan to two Columbus contracting firms to begin expansion of Fort Benning’s Officer Candidate School (OCS) was announced today. Georgia Sens. Herman E. Talmadge and Richard B. Russell announced that the government provided the funds to the Jordan Co. and Crown Construction Co. for expansion of OCS consisting of 17 prefabricated metal buildings and 70 masonry buildings and utilities.

President Johnson waited on his Texas ranch today for a cards-on-the table challenge: Come to the peace conference table or expect more bombings in North Viet Nam.
