Arnall Opens Drive

Former Gov. Ellis Arnall, attempting a comeback after 20 years of political obscurity, officially opened his campaign for governor Saturday with the promise that, if elected, he will give Georgia a 21st-Century administration. Surrounded by a bevy of top Democratic leaders, Arnall spoke to 7,000 cheering partisans at a political barbecue-rally on the fairgrounds in Newnan, his hometown.

The race for the 1968 GOP presidential nomination today shapes up as a contest between a “moderate,” Gov. George Romney of Michigan, and a more “conservative” candidate, former Vice President Richard Nixon. Republican county chairmen — the party “pros,” many of whom are convention delegates — pick Nixon over Romney by a vote of 5-to-3.
