Fifty years ago today, July 23, 1966

Cab Driver Slain

A 39-year-old Columbus taxi cab driver was gunned down by an irate man in front of a south Columbus night spot early this morning. According to police reports, L.N. Green had stopped to assist a motorist in starting a stalled automobile. An argument followed and as Green walked away, the motorist gunned down the cab driver.

Miss Georgia

Atlanta and Waycross supplied the preliminary winners Friday night in the Miss Georgia Pageant at the Columbus Three Arts Theater. Talent for the final night of preliminary competition ranged from a sober plea for appreciation of America from Miss Rockdale County, Regina Margot Neibert, to the wildest belly dance ever seen from Miss Pierce County, Patricia Roberson.

Religion

The Rev. Dr. James W. Cox, of Louisville, Ky., will be interim pastor at First Baptist Church until Sept. 11. Dr. Cox, of Louisville’s Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, will substitute for the Rev. Dr. G. Othell Hand who leaves next week on a five-week tour of Europe.
