Fifty years ago today, July 29, 1966

Contempt of Court

City Court Judge Oscar D. Smith Jr. today cited County Attorney Charles M. Evert for contempt of court in connection with litigation now pending between county commissioners and the judge. The citation reads that Evert made a statement at commission meeting to the effect that officials of City Court had “dipped their hands in the corporate till.”

Miss Alabama

Angie Grooms, the daughter of a federal judge, found five was her lucky number late Thursday when she was named Miss Alabama for 1966. The 5-foot-9 Auburn beauty sang a folk song during the talent segment of the pageant at the Alabama Theater.

Business

Industrialists already were hunting workers today to fill 250 jobs. Gulf States Container Corp., Albany, announced Thursday that the plant, to provide a $1.5 million annual payroll, will be constructed along the Chattahoochee River south of Fort Gaines, Ga., and off State Highway 38.
