Facing a maze of roadblocks, sponsors moved cautiously today in an effort to steer gun control legislation toward Senate action in the aftermath of the Texas massacre that left 16 dead and 31 wounded. There appeared little likelihood of immediate action.
Miss PC Pageant
Miss Phenix City hopefuls were to be guests at a luncheon today at Morrison’s Cafeteria in Columbus, hosted by Mayor John Barbee, the Jaycees and the Jaycettes.
River Cleanup
Columbus has “no choice” but to go along with state and federal demands that the Chattahoochee River be cleaned up by July 1, 1971 — even though it will cost the Columbus Water Works an additional $3 million to $3.5 million. The city must comply with the 1971 deadline, set July 15 in Atlanta at a federal conference on pollution of the Chattahoochee River.
