Steel Strike
A strike by members of the United Steel Workers of America, AFL-CIO, today brought a work stoppage by more than 300 workers at the Columbus Iron Works. Union members stopped work today to demand wage increases and a new, shorter term, contract with the firm.
HUAC Bill
Deputy Atty. Gen. Ramsey Clark said today the House Committee on Un-American Activities was making a mountain out of a molehill in its proposed ban against Americans aiding the Viet Cong. Clark said the legislation was a threat to the constitutional rights of free expression.
Alternate ‘Draft’
Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara said today the military will take in hundreds of thousands of young men who fail to meet current mental and physical fitness standards, in effect linking service training to the nation’s anti-poverty war.
