Fifty years ago today, September 6, 1966

S.A. Leader Slain

Prime Minister Hendrik F. Verwoerd died today at the hands of a white assassin. The assailant, in the uniform of a parliamentary messenger, stabbed Verwoerd in the neck as he sat in Parliament. Verwoerd, 64, was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.

Jack Brinkley

Third District congressional candidate Jack T. Brinkley flailed what he called “the disease of government intrusion” in a weekend handshaking foray. Brinkley, a 35-year-old Columbus attorney seeking the Democratic nomination for Congress in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.

Mosquitoes

The Aedes aegypti mosquito eradication program-aimed at the pest that carries yellow fever and dengue fever-has covered the southern and eastern areas of Columbus and is now centered in the northern sector.
