Just one glaring downtown need
I am a CSU employee. I recently discovered and very much enjoy the Broadway downtown restaurants and theatre activities and events that go on there. Very happy CSU is a big part of that.
Here's the problem:
We need a pharmacy down there badly. It's miles before you can get to one. A soda fountain-pharmacy would be a big hit. This year, another liquor store will open up. A large one. We have some very nice pubs and shops down there, but liquor and college students don't mix very well and it would be a shame to see one area go down with police problems in the near future.

Dumb, dumber and meaner
The Republicans' little tin god Reagan spouted such inanities as "A tree's a tree. How many more do you need to look at?" while refusing to expand Redwood National Park in 1966. He further exhibited his intellect by quoting a non-existent EPA study that supposedly claimed that "Air pollution comes not from chimneys and auto exhaust pipes, but from plants and trees."
If that kind of idiocy could dupe the gullible into voting for that tower of cerebral strength for President of these United States, it's small wonder that an even further dumbed-down populace is hailing Donald Trump, of the mysterious wad on the head, as the new savior of our stumbling homeland.
The mere thought of that hothead's finger on the nuclear button should send chills down the spine of all sentient beings, but no! Thousands follow with bated breath as his arrogant and intolerant views are broadcast from every form of media. One would almost believe that he was the Second Coming, as he claims miraculous powers to make the rest of the civilized world kneel, quaking, at our feet and to cause all manner of assorted marvels to occur, without a word of explanation as to how these wonders could possibly be accomplished.
It is frightening to see how every sort of bigotry and racial hatred is crawling from under the rocks in our country, in response to his example. It must be heartbreaking to the oppressed of the world, who look to us as a beacon of hope and refuge, to hear the vitriol aimed at their efforts to become citizens of our country. To those who believe that the Lord is watching, do you ever wonder what he thinks of you?

Bipartisan effort
Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Justin Amash (R-MI) introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representives on Wednesday that would eliminate the Drug Enforcement Administration's domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program. I hope all representatives in Georgia can support this bipartisan bill.

Never had a chance
I called her Ginger because her coat was a pretty red ginger color. She was too exhausted to even get up. She was dirty, underweight, and looked as though another dog had attacked her. She was frightened and shy when I tried to coax her to me. For the next two weeks I would go back to the same spot, bringing her food and water. At that point I could not bring her home, so I called Columbus Animal Control to come get her. I was thinking she would be in a safe place until I could make arrangements to adopt her.
I went to visit her on the weekend and was told I could not adopt her until the following Monday. I had to work late on that Monday and called to check on her. I got voicemail and left a message. I called back Tuesday and was told she was euthanised Monday morning.
I was horrified and devastated to hear the news. How could this happen?
They told me to wait till Monday, which I did. She was never given a chance to have a loving home, a comfortable sofa to sleep on, walk in the park, to be loved and cared for. I found other people have experienced a similar tragedy with Animal Control. This horror happend several weeks ago and the pain is still heart-wrenching. Every day when I drive past the place I was feeding her I am reminded of her sweet sad little face. She trusted me to help her and I never got the chance. Has anyone else had this happen?

Unpleasant odor
Something stinks about this change to once-a-week trash pickup and it is not just week-old garbage. The mayor is governing against the will of the majority who want to keep twice-a-week garbage pickup for cleanliness and health reasons. Why was there no discussion about keeping the pickup but raising the trash fee? In the past, city council has discussed and/or voted on a fee increase. My husband says no one understands me when I call this social engineering, but that is exactly what the mayor has decided we "should do."
One way to keep twice-a-week pick-up is to make bulk items (i.e. eviction furniture and used appliances) a taxpayer pay-as-you-go service like we have right now with tree removal. All taxpayers should not have to subsidize landlords who evict their tenants. City council, please reconsider leaving in place what has worked well all these years in Columbus, even if it means raising the trash fee. I have heard nothing about cutting our fee for less service, so either way this is a fee hike on all citizens.
