Muscogee Schools to restrict attendance at basketball games due to ‘security concern’
Attendance at two basketball games in the Muscogee County School District will be restricted because of an unspecified security concern, MCSD announced Friday morning.
Only the parents and guardians of the varsity student athletes will be allowed to attend Friday night’s boys and girls games between Carver and Spencer high schools.
The restriction stems from what MCSD described in its news release as “an ongoing dispute among a limited group of individuals in the community.” The decision comes after consulting with local law enforcement, MCSD said.
The games will be streamed live on the district’s YouTube Channel for those who can’t attend. The girls game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m., immediately followed by the boys.
The Ledger-Enquirer asked MCSD interim communications director Kimberly Wright to be more specific about the dispute and the security concern.
“The concern arose out of activity off school campus which did not involve MCSD students or staff but had implications that could impact the area surrounding the school,” she said in an email to the L-E. “However, out of an abundance of caution, we took steps based on information we received and the totality of the circumstances to ensure the safety and welfare of our students, staff and parents.”
The L-E asked Wright what was the activity and who was doing it. This story will be updated when those answers are received.
Columbus Police Department spokesman Sgt. Aaron Evrard also didn’t disclose details when asked about MCSD’s announcement.
“We support their decision in taking these measures and stand ready to assist if needed,” Evrard told the L-E in an email.
