Vote: Can Columbus college football fans predict which teams head to SEC championship?
College football season is in full swing and is already chaotic two weeks in.
Last weekend, three Sun Belt Conference teams pulled off upsets by defeating Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Nebraska. Alabama survived a close game with Texas, prompting some commentators to wonder how the team will perform for the rest of the season.
My colleagues and I at the Ledger-Enquirer are not football experts.
We’re simple fans who occasionally like to share unqualified opinions when fun things are happening in sports news — such as guessing who we think will appear in the SEC Championship Game.
These are the predictions we shared with each other in the newsroom. After ripping us to shreds for this, please take then share our poll on the subject.
Let’s see if Columbus can accurately predict the outcome of the 2022 college football season.
The Ledger-Enquirer staff’s unqualified opinions
Kelby Hutchison, Breaking News Reporter
“Alabama and Georgia will play because Georgia basically has the East dominated at this point with their easy schedule. Alabama has actual competition to compete with in the West. Arkansas seems to have a decent team this year. Tennessee had a good recruiting class. Ole Miss will play well against ‘Bama. And we also have to deal with what Bear Bryant affectionately termed the ‘cow college across the state.’ Auburn always plays their hardest against us (Alabama), and an upset is never unlikely in that match-up.”
Blake Kaplan, McClatchy South Region Editor
“Alabama vs. Georgia is the most obvious choice, but I think Mississippi State versus Georgia has an outside shot too. Sadly, I’m not picking LSU.”
Brittany McGee, Business & Engagement Reporter
“Like Blake said, Alabama vs. Georgia is obvious. But, I’m going with Arkansas and Georgia. Mainly because I grew up in Arkansas and think they deserve good things after the last... decade. And Georgia is Georgia.”
Mark Rice, Staff Writer
“I can’t think of any reason to pick against Georgia and Alabama — unless you’re an Auburn fan.”
Nick Wooten, Accountability/Investigative reporter
“I’m qualified. It’s Georgia and Alabama. They’ve met twice in the SEC title game since 2018. They’re the two best teams in the country.”
