A pair of big innings led West Alabama to a doubleheader sweep of No. 5 Columbus State on Sunday afternoon at Ragsadale Field.
The Tigers scored six runs in the eighth inning of Game 1 on their way to a 12-6 victory. CSU made six errors in the game.
In the nightcap, they scored five times in the fourth en route to a 8-2 victory.
In Game 1, the Cougars got off to a good start with Wes Adkins hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
The Tigers scored four runs in the third inning off CSU starter Jarrett Coker. They added two more in the sixth and six in the eighth. CSU helped West Alabama by making three errors in the eighth.
CSU tried to climb back into the game in the bottom of the eighth with four runs to climb to within 12-6.
Coker suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
CSU again got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning of Game 2. Thomas Morrison doubled home Ryan Lewis with a drive off the center field wall for a 1-0 lead.
West Alabama took the lead with five runs in the fourth.
CSU starter Chris Snipes took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Morrison cranked a solo homer to lead off the fourth for CSU, but that would prove to be the final run of the day for CSU.
The teams will close the three-game season-opening series at 2 p.m. today at Ragsdale Field.
NW FLORIDA STATE 10, CVCC 4
NICEVILLE, Fla. — Northwest Florida State scored seven runs in the fifth inning in its win over Chattahoochee Valley in the Max Bruner Classic.
Drew Freeman came on in relief and allowed six runs without registering an out.
Derek Varnadore started the game for CVCC and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts. Freeman replaced him.
Stephen Bishop hit a two-run homer for CVCC.
