Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball falls to 3-2 Southern Union

WADLEY, Ala. — Chattahoochee Valley made too many miscues in the field and left too many runners on base, spoiling the sparkling outing from starting pitcher Derek Varnadore in a 3-2 loss.

Derek Varnadore went the distance, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out nine. But the Bison scored two runs in the second inning on his wild pitches after CVCC’s center fielder lost a routine flyball in the sun.

A leadoff single, balk, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the sixth.

CVCC answered with one run in the seventh on Kevin Putkonen’s one-out double and Jeff Shields’ single to left. The Pirates scored another run in the eighth. Chris Duncan bunted for a single, went to second on the overthrow, to third on groundout and home on Bo Foster’s infield single. But they left the tying run on base in the final three innings, as well as failing to score with the bases loaded and one out in the second. CVCC out-hit Southern 9-4 — Tom Richardson (2-for-4) had the most — but left eight runners on base.

CVCC fell to 20-12 overall and 6-6 in the Alabama Community College Conference after losing the series two games to one; Southern Union improved to 22-10 and 9-3.

Because CVCC’s field still is too wet from last week’s rain, the Pirates won’t play their scheduled home game today. So their next game is Wednesday at Faulkner University.
