CVCC 12, BevilL State-Sumiton 3

SUMITON, Ala. — The Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball team’s batting lineup did most of the heavy lifting early, leaving pitchers Derek Varndore and Jacob Fox to hang on for the win.

The Pirates scored seven runs in the first inning and added one run in the fourth — a solo home run by Tom Richardson. They added four more in the seventh.

Varnadore struck out four and gave up four hits in four innings to earn the win for the Pirates. Fox allowed one run, three hits and struck out five in relief.

CVCC’s Heath Peterson was 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs; Ryan Noelte was 4-for-5 with an RBI; Josh Whitehead was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs; and Tom Richardson was 2-for-3 with a home run.

“We set the tone and put it away early,” CVCC coach Adam Thomas said. “They made a little noise in the middle of the game, but it wasn’t enough.”

The Pirates improved to 23-12 with the non-conference win and host Bevil State in a makeup game today at 3 p.m.
