Georgia Little League state tournament: Rain forces suspension in Northern game

The two late games in the Georgia Little League state tournament were suspended Monday night when a thunderstorm drenched the American Little League complex.

In the two games, Columbus Northern was leading Brooks 3-2 in the second inning of their Pool B game. In the Pool A game, Cartersville was leading Midway 8-1 in the third.

The suspended games are set to resume at 5:30 p.m. today prior to the start of the regularly scheduled games. Northern and Midway were both already scheduled to play games at 5:30 p.m. today.

In Monday’s game, Northern scored three runs in the top of the first. Knox Carter doubled in two runs, and Kobie Buglioli drove in one with a ground out.

Brooks scored its two runs in the second as George Boyd and Seth Thomason knocked in runs. Brooks will have two runners on base with two outs when the game resumes.

MARTINEZ-EVANS 7, WARNER ROBINS 6

Tyler Avret scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning as Martinez-Evans shocked Warner Robins in the other Pool B game.

Martinez-Evans trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth. It scored a pair of runs in that inning on Ely Melton hit a homer after Avret had led off with a walk.

In the top of the sixth, Martinez-Evans’ Bryan Whitney walked the bases loaded, but got Logan Arnett to ground out to end the inning.

In the sixth, Logan Stanley led off by reaching on an error. After an out, Avret walked again. Melton hit a ground ball that got away from the second baseman, allowing Stanley to score the tying run and Avret to go to third.

Dave Martens had a big game for Warner Robins. He hit a pair of home runs and drove in five. Connor Brown also drove in a run for Warner Robins.

Martens hit a two-run homer and Brown singled in one as Warner Robins took a 3-0 lead in the first.

Martinez-Evans tied the game in the third on Avret’s three-run homer.

Martens responded with a three-run homer of his own in the fourth.

Warner Robins falls to 1-2 in pool play with one game left, today against undefeated Walton (2-0). Martinez-Evans is 1-1 and plays Northern today.

POOL A

Toccoa 19, Murphey Candler 5

Toccoa scored 10 runs in the first inning as it stayed unbeaten in pool play.

Tristen Powell earned the win, pitching 2 1-3 innings, striking out six while allowing one run.

Leading hitters for Toccoa were Kooper Briley (3-for-3, 4R, 2B, HR, 4RBI) and Blake Walker (2-for-2, 3R, 3RBI).

Drew Barrows (3-for-3, 2B, 2R, 3RBI) led Murphey Candler.

Format: 10 teams are split into two pools. Each team plays the other four teams in its pool over a five-day period. The two teams with the best records in each pool advance to a single-elimination final four. The champion advances to the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins.
