Little League: Northern wins 12-7; Cartersville tops Midway 19-1

The two suspended games from Monday night were the only games played Tuesday in the Georgia Little League state tournament at American Little League (Double Churches Road).

Columbus Northern led 3-2 in the second before Monday’s delay. Northern went on to win 12-7 to improve to 2-0 in Pool B play.

Cartersville, which was up 8-1 Monday, beat Midway 19-1 in four innings.

The entire schedule has been pushed back a day after Monday’s rain delay.

Pool play will now end Thursday night with the semifinals Friday and the championship game Saturday.

NORTHERN 12, BROOKS 7

Down 5-3 after two innings, Columbus Northern manager Randy Morris learned something about his team.

“We were down early but got a couple of hits when we needed to,” he said after Northern’s second win in pool play. “We found out that we can be down and come back.”

Northern scored two in the fourth and six in the fifth to stay undefeated.

Troy Gilliland came in in the bottom of the fourth with Northern trailing 6-5. He came away with the win, pitching 2 2-3 innings and allowing one earned run.

Northern’s six-run fifth was highlighted by a pinch-hit Cason Sizemore grand slam.

Sizemore worked the count full before Brooks starter Brandon Bell made a mistake.

“He threw me a fastball straight down the middle,” Sizemore said. “So I took it.”

Blake Hicks, Jacob Pate, Knox Carter and Gilliland all had two hits. One of Gilliland’s was a solo home run.

For Brooks, Robert Townsend and George Boyd had two hits each.

POOL A

CARTERSVILLE 19, MIDWAY 1
