Columbus radio station changes format to all sports, with local talk and game broadcasts
A new all-sports radio network, covering local, regional and national sports, is launching this week in Columbus.
Sportsvisions 92.1 FM is the next step in the evolution of Sportsvisions, the multimedia sports marketing agency Columbus natives Daryll “DJ” Jones and Dale Williams started two decades ago.
In partnership with PMB Broadcasting, which owns 10 radio stations in Columbus, 92.1 FM is changing its format from R&B music to sports talk and sporting events, officially as of Wednesday.
“I’m incredibly excited personally and for Sportsvisions and everything that we’ve accomplished up to this point,” Jones, a Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Famer, told the Ledger-Enquirer. “You know, it’s been 20 years in the making, but I’m more excited about what this means for the local sports community. It’s really something that’s been needed.”
Columbus already has a sports radio station with 95.7 FM, which carries ESPN programming, but 92.1 FM will be the only radio station with a local sports show.
“We are excited to partner with DJ on this new all-sports station,” PMB owner Jimbo Martin, a Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Famer, said in a news release. “We have been working for some time to afford the platform he deserves. His talents are certainly unmistakable, and he brings so much knowledge to the world of sports.”
Jones, 62, was a star dual-threat quarterback in the 1970s at Carver High School. He was a backup QB on Georgia’s 1980 national championship team, then moved to defensive back as a sophomore, helping the Bulldogs win three SEC titles during his UGA career.
The Green Bay Packers selected Jones in the seventh ground (181st overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft. In three NFL seasons (two with Green Bay, one with the Denver Broncos), he played in 25 games with three starts.
Jones was on injured reserve with a dislocated shoulder when the Broncos lost to the Washington Redskins 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII.
After he retired from the NFL, Jones returned to Columbus, created and grew his business and had stints as a sports radio talk show host on WDAK-AM 540, sports director at WRBL-TV and an analyst for the UGA Bulldogs Sports Network. He also gave back to the community by conducting camps and establishing annual luncheons honoring local high school athletes with awards.
“DJ’s devotion to the young athlete in Columbus for the last 20 years is remarkable,” Martin said. “DJ has built his legacy around Sportsvisions for the last 20 years and we are extremely proud to partner with him and the addition of Sportsvisions 92.1 FM, the Voice of Sports in Columbus and the Valley area.”
Sportsvisions 92.1 FM’s programming will include:
- Jones and sidekick Thrift Barringer discussing local, regional and national sports news and conducting interviews with special guests Mondays-Fridays from 6-9 a.m.
- Syndicated content Mondays-Fridays comprising national shows hosted by Dan Patrick (9 a.m. to noon), Colin Cowherd (noon to 3 p.m.) and Paul Finebaum (3-7 p.m.).
- Live broadcasts of games played by the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves and local high school football teams, plus NASCAR races.
The network will be accessible on over the air on 92.1 FM and streamed digitally through its website, Facebook page and mobile app.
Jones expressed his gratitude for Martin making this new venture possible.
“Our respect and thanks go to Jimbo Martin,” Jones said. “For him to see whatever it was in us to put this together, he deserves a lot of credit. He’s the straw that stirs the drink.”
