World Cup champion Argentina to play soccer match in Auburn. How to get tickets
Soccer fans in the Chattahoochee Valley will have a chance to watch in person reigning World Cup champion Argentina play an exhibition match a week before they start competing for a repeat title.
Argentina will face Iceland on June 9 at 8:30 p.m. EDT in Jordan-Hare Stadium, which usually hosts a different kind of football, Auburn University announced Thursday.
The match is part of Road to 26, a series of warmups for World Cup teams preparing for the globe’s most prestigious soccer tournament this summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
This will be the first international soccer game in Jordan-Hare’s 87-year history, one of college football’s most iconic venues.
“To have the reigning FIFA World Cup champions choose Auburn as the site of their last match before defending their title represents a tremendous achievement and an incredible opportunity for Auburn Athletics and Auburn University,” Auburn athletics director John Cohen said in the news release. “This exhibition between Argentina and Iceland will bring worldwide attention and exposure to Auburn and our community.”
Argentina and Iceland in FIFA world rankings
Argentina is third in the latest FIFA world rankings (behind No. 1 France and No. 2 Spain) and is led by Lionel Messi, an eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, awarded annually to the player deemed the world’s best.
Iceland is 75th in the rankings but stunned soccer fans by tying Argentina 1-1 during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. That’s the only previous match between these two teams.
“We look forward to the exhibition between Argentina and Iceland and to welcoming visitors from around the world to experience Auburn’s world-class hospitality,” Auburn Mayor Ron Anders said in the news release. “Athletic events have long been an economic driver for our community, boosting our local retailers, restaurants and hotels while providing a way for fans to have a special experience together in the heart of our city. We appreciate the hard work of Auburn Athletics and Auburn University in bringing this event to Auburn.”
