Latest Sam Leavitt Update is Good News for LSU Fans

When head coach Lane Kiffin and LSU landed a commitment from Sam Leavitt, the top quarterback available in the transfer portal, many fans celebrated the win.

However, there was another segment of the team's fanbase that was concerned about the foot injury that ended Leavitt's season last year.

Leavitt had surgery to repair the damage, but there was some concern that he would miss the beginning of the season if his mobility was limited. But according to the newest update from Kiffin himself, Leavitt appears to be recovering just fine.

"Lane Kiffin said that quarterback transfer Sam Leavitt ran 21 MPH on the GPS the other day as he recovers from a foot injury. He’s set to be ready for summer camp," ESPN's Pete Thamel posted on X.

Kiffin's update comes just weeks after he told reporters that he expected Leavitt to have no limitations during practices this summer.

"He's going to be able to do full summer stuff," Kiffin stated at the time. "I don't know what the exact date is, but yes, he's going to be able to do full stuff in the summer."

Leavitt is recovering from a Lisfranc injury suffered in an October loss to Houston. He had an initial surgery shortly after and a subsequent follow-up surgery earlier this year.

Leavitt had pins in his foot removed last month. He began running and doing light mobility exercises shortly after, and he's on track to be fully cleared for LSU's preseason camp this summer.

The 21-year-old passer recently posted a video on his Instagram account doing sprints with the caption: "20mph first day back on the ground!!! Been a grind gotta keep going 🙌."

In two seasons at Arizona State, Leavitt threw for 4,513 yards, 34 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 749 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He will replace 2025 starter Garrett Nussmeier, who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
