Naomi Osaka's Opponent, Laura Siegemund, Takes Aim At Her French Open Outfit
Naomi Osaka made quite the entrance for her first-round match at Roland Garros this Tuesday.
Osaka showed up to Court Suzanne Lenglen in a black corset and floor-length skirt that were designed by Kevin Germanier. She eventually removed her initial outfit to unveil her gold minidress from Nike. It was an impressive look for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
While there was plenty of buzz surrounding Osaka's outfit, her performance was even more impressive. She defeated Laura Siegemund 6-3, 7-6 (3).
For some bizarre reason, Siegemund was asked about Osaka's outfit reveal after losing in straight sets. Let's just say she wasn't a happy camper.
"I honestly don't care," Siegemund told reporters. "I'm here to play tennis, not to do a fashion show."
Those remarks from Siegemund caused quite the uproar on social media.
"Oh she's mad she lost," one fan replied.
"She's a such a pathetic loser," another fan said. "Like what tennis are you speaking of."
"To be fair I'm not sure why she would care about what her opponent is wearing to the court, usually are locked in, really don't think this was a shot at Osaka at all but its definitely the most Siegemund quote ever," a third person commented.
Not fazed by the naysayers.
Osaka spoke to the media about her gold outfit during her post-match press conference. She made it abundantly clear that she won't let her critics influence her style.
"Sometimes people say athletes are in ‘show business' or ‘entertainers' or whatever," Osaka told reporters. "For me, Grand Slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I'm an entertainer."
Next up for Osaka is a showdown with Donna Vekic. If she wins that match, she'll face either Iva Jovic or Emma Navarro in the third round.
