Magic Hire Spurs Assistant as Next Head Coach: Report

The San Antonio Spurs are fully focused on their Game 7 matchup in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.

However, that does not mean the rest of the league has stopped working, and for the Orlando Magic - who were eliminated in the first round of the postseason - the organization has been in the middle of a head coaching search after surprisingly firing Jahmal Mosley following five seasons with the franchise.

On Friday, the Magic finally reached an agreement on a new head coach, as ESPN's Shams Charania reported the team is hiring Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney.

Sweeney has played an integral role in San Antonio's success under interim head coach Mitch Johnson and will reportedly remain with the Spurs throughout the remainder of their playoff run, which San Antonio hopes extends deep into June with an NBA championship still within reach.

His primary responsibility on the Spurs' staff has been overseeing the team's defense, which has developed into one of the league's top units. Since Johnson elevated Sweeney into a larger role, San Antonio improved from a 28-win team last season to a 62-win squad this year.

The Magic also reportedly considered Jeff Van Gundy and Billy Donovan for the position before ultimately landing on Sweeney. Prior to joining San Antonio, he spent time as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and Brooklyn Nets.
