Fantasy Football Reaction: Eagles Finally Trade A.J. Brown to the Patriots, Pending Physical
The New England Patriots will acquire A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2028 first-round pick and a '27 fifth-rounder, pending a physical, which completes a long-expected deal after the June 1 salary cap window opened. The move reunites Brown with Mike Vrabel, his former head coach in Tennessee, and gives Drake Maye the most dangerous receiver of his young NFL career. Philadelphia moves on after four straight 1,000-yard seasons from Brown, who helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX.
Brown's Philadelphia peak came immediately. In 2022, he drew 145 targets, caught 88 passes for 1,496 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. His volume climbed in 2023, when he finished with 158 targets, 106 receptions, 1,456 yards and seven TDs. Injuries limited him to 13 games in 2024, but he still produced 97 targets, 67 catches, 1,079 yards and seven scores. Last season brought 121 targets, 78 catches, 1,003 yards and seven TDs in 15 games. The touchdown total remained stable, but Brown's yardage, yards-per-catch average, and weekly ceiling dropped from his first two Philadelphia seasons.

A.J. Brown Trade: From New England's Perspective
Brown immediately becomes the top option in New England's passing game. Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, Demario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III give the Patriots more depth than they had a year ago, but Brown elevates the potential of the offense. He can win outside, handle high-value targets, and give Maye a physical separator who does not need ideal conditions to produce.
Doubs can settle into a secondary role, while Douglas fits better as a slot option than as a volume driver. Boutte remains a potential for being traded. For Vrabel, this is a familiar player with a clear purpose: Raise the ceiling of a passing game built around a young quarterback.
A.J. Brown Trade: From Philadelphia's Perspective
Philadelphia gets premium future draft capital while resetting a receiver room that had already started to change. DeVonta Smith now becomes Jalen Hurts' top wide receiver, with Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks, Hollywood Brown, Elijah Moore and Samori Toure competing for roles behind him. The Eagles still have Saquon Barkley and Dallas Goedert, so the offense does not need to force all of Brown's vacated volume onto one player. Still, Brown's exit removes the most imposing target from the passing game and puts more weekly responsibility on Smith, Lemon and the new-look receiver rotation.
A.J. Brown Trade Fantasy Football Outlook
Brown remains a strong PPR starter in New England, but he translates more safely as a potentially elite WR2 than a strong No. 1 to guard against declining performance and a tougher schedule. In regular fantasy setups with three starting wide receivers and a flex, Brown figures to stay in lineups every week. His target share should be safe, and the move gives him an unrivaled path to being the unquestioned first read.
For Philadelphia, Smith gets the biggest fantasy bump and should be treated as a strong WR2 with room for more if the target volume spikes. Lemon becomes the upside bet, especially if he earns a full-time role early. Wicks, Hollywood Brown and Moore are more matchup-based options until the rotation settles. The Eagles can still produce useful fantasy pieces, but Brown's departure spreads the risk across a less proven group. We'll take a closer look at this group throughout the summer, but it's clearly going to be all about featuring Smith, Goedert, Saquon Barkley and then sprinkling in everyone else.
