Blue Jays Announce Trade News After Alejandro Kirk Decision
The Toronto Blue Jays entered Wednesday at 35-38 and third in the American League East despite battling several setbacks this season. Injuries have tested the club throughout the first half, forcing manager John Schneider to lean on depth pieces across the roster.
One of the most significant absences came behind the plate. Two-time All-Star Alejandro Kirk missed 62 games after suffering a fractured left thumb against the Chicago White Sox on April 3, leaving the Blue Jays without one of their most important hitters and defensive leaders.
Toronto turned to Tyler Heineman and rookie Brandon Valenzuela to fill the void.
While Valenzuela emerged as a capable major-league option during Kirk's absence, Heineman provided much-needed veteran experience at the position and continued to showcase the defensive skills that have made him valuable throughout his career.
Kirk was eventually activated from the injured list before a game against the New York Yankees on Friday. The Blue Jays, faced with a major roster decision, opted to keep Valenzuela in the lineup and designated Heineman for assignment.
Ahead of Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox, the Blue Jays announced that Heineman had been traded to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations.

Although his offensive numbers were modest, Heineman leaves Toronto as one of baseball's more effective defensive catchers. Since the start of the 2025 season, he ranks tied for third among all MLB catchers with 16 Defensive Runs Saved.
This season, he threw out 12 of 33 would-be basestealers, with his 36.4% caught-stealing rate leading all American League catchers with at least 15 stolen-base attempts against. Those numbers help explain why the Angels moved quickly to acquire him.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, remain in good hands behind the plate. Kirk is back in the lineup after his lengthy recovery, and Valenzuela has shown enough during his opportunity to remain a reliable backup option. With the catching position stabilized once again, Toronto can turn its attention toward climbing back into contention during the second half of the season.
