Former Columbus Clingstones player to make MLB debut with Atlanta Braves this week

A former Columbus Clingstones starting pitcher who was the opening day starter this season has been called up to the Major Leagues, according to a news release from the Clingstones.

The release says Owen Murphy is expected to make his Major League debut later this week for the Atlanta Braves. He would be the sixth Clingstone in the franchise’s two-year history to reach the Majors with the Braves.

Other former Clingstones who have reached the Major Leagues are Didier Fuentes, Hayden Harris, Rolddy Muñoz, JR Ritchie and Jim Jarvis, according to the news release.

As Atlanta’s sixth-ranked prospect, Murphy became the first pitcher in Clingtsones history to record 10 strikeouts in a game, the news release says.

In five starts with the Clingstones, Murphy went 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 20.2 innings before earning a promotion to the Braves’ Class AAA affiliate in Gwinnett, according to the news release.

The news release says between Columbus and Gwinnett, Murphy went 5-7 over 16 starts with a 4.44 ERA and 92 strikeouts across 81 innings.

Murphy was selected by the Braves with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Riverside-Brookfield High School in Illinois, according to the news release.
