Rangers Facing Decision After Unfortunate Jacob deGrom News

Jacob deGrom is now in year 13 of his MLB career, and turned 38 in June. The veteran starter has managed to stay healthy over the last couple seasons with the Texas Rangers.

deGrom and the Rangers' pairing got off to a rocky start after he signed a 5-year, $185 million contract before the 2023 season. He made only nine starts during 2023 and 2024 combined due to Tommy John surgery.

deGrom got healthy for 2025, making 30 starts and hurling 172 ⅔ innings. Now in 2026, the 38-year-old has been excellent again.

In 18 starts and 100 ⅔ innings pitched, deGrom is 7-5 with a 3.49 ERA. He has struck out 122 and walked only 22. While he is now many years removed from his 2010s prime with the New York Mets, the right-hander has been especially important to the Texas rotation.

Heading into the final weekend of the first half, the Rangers are 47-46 and hold a slim half-game lead over the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West.

They have been playing some good baseball lately, but the team just received some injury news to do with deGrom. Per Shawn McFarland of Dallas Morning News, Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said that the starter will miss his Sunday start due to a glute/hip strain.

The club now has a choice to make regarding how they will handle the pitching plan for that game. It will be against their division and in-state rival Houston Astros.

Texas could go with a bullpen game, as none of their starters will be rested enough for the start. The depth chart in Triple-A Round Rock does not have great options for a call-up, though a bullpen game would be especially tough seeing as the Rangers have not had an off day since Monday.

The team's concern might lie more with how deGrom will look coming out of the break. Schumaker said that he does not know if the veteran would be available right after the break concludes July 17. It is possible deGrom could head to the injured list.

At least for the moment, deGrom's glute/hip strain does not sound like it will be a big deal. In the immediate future, Texas will try to get the best options possible for Sunday's game against Houston.
