Red Sox Announce Jahmai Jones Decision After Tigers Trade
The Boston Red Sox handed Jahmai Jones his first start with the club on Saturday, inserting the newly acquired infielder into the lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays. Boston acquired the 28-year-old from the Detroit Tigers earlier this week in exchange for a player to be named later.
Jones was penciled into the lineup batting eighth and playing left field. While primarily an infielder, he has experience in the outfield, giving manager Alex Cora another right-handed option as Boston continues its playoff push.
Saturday marked Jones' first starting appearance for the Red Sox following the trade. The club acquired him to add depth and versatility to its bench as it looks to strengthen its roster for the second half of the season.

Jones entered the game batting .137 with two home runs in limited action with Detroit this season. Despite the struggles, the Red Sox see value in his defensive flexibility and ability to contribute in multiple roles.
Boston entered Saturday with a 48-48 record, sitting third in the American League East. With the postseason race tightening, the club is looking for contributions throughout its roster as it chases an American League Wild Card berth.
Jones was once regarded as one of baseball's top prospects and now gets a fresh opportunity with Boston. The Red Sox hope a change of scenery can help him become a productive depth piece over the remainder of the season.
Saturday's start gives the organization its first extended look at its newest acquisition. If Jones can provide reliable defense and solid production against left-handed pitching, he could earn a consistent role as Boston continues its push toward October.
