Georgia Tech notes: Jackets capitalize on Hokies' mistake
ATLANTA -- Tech turned a fumble into points for the first time since the Oct. 10 game against Clemson.
Linebacker Tyler Marcordes forced Virginia Tech receiver Cam Phillips to fumble the ball at the end of a 14-yard run. Jamal Golden, who was originally beaten on the completion, followed the play and grabbed the loose ball. Eight plays later the Yellow Jackets scored a touchdown.
Georgia Tech turned two fumbles into points against Clemson, one of them a recovery for a touchdown by Adam Gotsis. Entering the Virginia Tech game, the Yellow Jackets had forced 14 fumbles and turned them into four touchdowns and two field goals.
A career-long catch for Jeune
Sophomore Ricky Jeune continues to establish himself as the team's go-to receiver, a step even more important since Micheal Summers quit the team this week.
Jeune showed his skills on the second play of the game on Thursday night. He was wide open on a seam route down the middle that went for 58 yards and set up a touchdown. It was the longest reception of his career.
Georgia Tech honors the champs
Georgia Tech continued to honor the 1990 national championship team.
The Yellow Jackets wore the same style of uniforms from that season, with navy blue jerseys, white pants and gold helmets. Georgia Tech had worn white helmets for the Florida State victory and stayed with them for last week's loss at Virginia.
More than 110 players, coaches and staff members were on hand for the ceremony, including coach Bobby Ross, offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen, defensive coordinator George O'Leary, quarterback Shawn Jones and kicker Scott Sisson.
The honorary captains for Georgia Tech were head coach Bobby Ross, tackle Darryl Jenkins and defensive lineman Jeremiah McClary.
Yellow Jackets changes, injuries
Senior Marcus Allen got the start at B-back ahead of freshman Marcus Marshall. Allen carried for 9 yards on the first play of the game and later scored on a 4-yard run, his second touchdown of the season. Marshall came in and played the next series.
Marshall was shaken up in the second quarter but was able to return.
Georgia Tech was without freshman defensive back A.J. Gray, who missed his second straight game after suffering a hip injury against Florida State.
Linebacker P.J. Davis suffered an apparent ankle injury in the first half and did not return.
Quick hits
Virginia Tech unveiled special stickers for its helmets that honor coach Frank Beamer, who announced his retirement at the end of the season. Longtime Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster admitted he would like the head coaching position. "I don't think this program needs a culture change," Foster said.
