Dell McGee, Charles Kelly up for Broyles Award
Two coaches with Bi-City ties were named Wednesday as nominees for the 2015 Broyles Award.
Georgia Southern's Dell McGee and Florida State's Charles Kelly were among 34 assistant coaches named.
The Broyles Award is given to College Football's Assistant Coach of the Year. It is presented by the Rotary Club of Little Rock and Delta Dental.
McGee is in his second season as an assistant at Georgia Southern. McGee coaches the running backs.
Last season, the Eagles were the nation's best in rushing with 384 yards per game. This season, the Eagles are rushing for 364.3 yards per game.
Georgia Southern has two games remaining in the regular season. The Eagles host South Alabama on Saturday and Georgia State on Dec. 5.
McGee is a Columbus native who played high school football at Kendrick. He went on to play at Auburn.
He later was the head coach at Carver. He led the Tigers from 2005-12, earning an 88-19 record -- 21-6 in the playoffs. McGee led the Tigers to the 2007 state championship.
McGee left Carver to become a part of the Auburn support staff.
Kelly is the defensive coordinator for the Seminoles. He also coaches the defensive backs.
Kelly, who played at Auburn, was hired in 1990 at Central by Wayne Trawick. He stayed with the Red Devils for three years.
