College baseball roundup: CSU survives slugfest 18-17

Christian Miller drove in Jackson Oliver with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday to gave Columbus State an 18-17 win over Georgia College.

Columbus State (19-4, 7-1 Peach Belt Conference) pounded out 21 hits, including homers from Blake Edwards, Matt Nettles, Mike McClellan and Lake Hart. Ryan Ihle went 4-for-5 for CSU. Hart had to hits but had six RBIs on the day. Three came on his sixth- inning homer. Nettles and McClellan each drove in three runs.

Georgia College also hit four homers. The biggest was Logan Mattix’s three-run homer in the ninth that gave Georgia College its first lead of the day at 17-16. CSU tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. The teams have hit 17 homers in the first two games of the series.

Kolton Ingram (2-0) worked 1 1/3 inning of hitless relief to get the win. Grant Khan (0-2) got just one out before giving up the winning run and he took the loss.

CSU goes for the sweep today at 1 p.m.

CVCC 5-13, Enterprise State 2-3

Brandon Hill went 4-for-9 with eight RBIs in leading Chattahoochee Valley to a sweep at Enteprise State on Saturday afternoon.

Hill went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs knocked in in Game 1, a 5-2 win. She went 2-for-5 with a homer and six runs knocked in in Game 2, a 13-3 victory.

JT Thomas went 3-for-3 and AJ Willoughby went 3-for-4.

Trent Simpson picked up the win in the first game. He pitched 1  2/3 innings in relief. Chase Adkins started and went 6 1/3, allowing two runs — one earned — and four hits with five strikeouts.

Will Campbell drove in four runs in the second game. Thomas had three more hits.

Logan haner picked up the win.

CVCC hosts Wallace State-Dothan on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Georgia 1, Lipscomb 0

Michael Curry hit a pinch-hit single to drive in Stephen Wrenn with two out in the bottom of the ninth Saturday to give Georgia a 1-0 win over Lipscomb at Foley Field.

Heath Holder gave up just one over eight innings and struck out eight. Blakely Brown (2-1) pitched the ninth inning for the Bulldogs and he picked up the win. He allowed one hit and struck out two. Jeffrey Passantino (3-1) limited Georgia to just five hits over 8 2-3 innings and he was the hard-luck loser for Lipscomb (9-6).

Wrenn, Skyler Weber, Daniel Nichols and LJ Talley each had a hit for Georgia (11-5).

Georgia won Friday night’s game 9-8 in 11 innings.

The Bulldogs go for the sweep today at 1 p.m. The game will be available on SEC Network Plus.

Auburn 10, Oral Roberts 1

Casey Mize spread six hits over seven innings and gave up just one run Saturday as Auburn beat Oral Roberts 10-1 at Plainsman Park.

Mize (1-1) struck out four and walked just one in the win. Gordon Cardenas pitched the final two innings. He gave up one hit in relief. Logan Michaels (0-2) allowed five runs over four innings and took the loss.

Anfernee Grier (Russell County) went 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in one. Jordan Ebert led Auburn at the plate. He went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs.

Oral Roberts won Friday night’s game 8-7, so the team play for the series today at 2 p.m. The game will be available on SEC Network Plus.

Houston 3, Alabama 2

Alabama rallied after falling behind 3-0 early, but No. 21 Houston held on for a 3-2 win Saturday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

With the score 3-2 in the eighth inning, Alabama loaded the bases but could not get the tying run home.

Keith Holcombe went 2-for-5 and drove in a run. Connor Short and Chance Vincent each went 2-for-3 for the Tide (10-4).

Seth Romero (2-0) gave up two runs on five hits in six innings and picked up the win. Jake Walters (1-2) gave up three runs on six hits over five innings and took the loss.

Houston won Friday night’s game 3-1 and looks for a sweep today at 1 p.m. The game will be available on SEC Network Plus.

Florida State 14, Georgia Tech 9

No. 9 Georgia Tech built a 5-0 lead Saturday, but No. 14 Florida State came roaring back with a six-run fifth inning and a five-run eighth inning to rally for the win at Dick Howser Stadium.

Matt Gonzalez went 4-for-6 and drove in a run for Georgia Tech. Connor Justus went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Wade Bailey went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI.

Florida State (12-3, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) was led by Dylan Busby, who went 2-for-5 with a homer and drove in three runs.

Chase Haney (2-0) gave up one hit over 3 2/3 innings and picked up the win in relief. Burton Delaney (1-1) gave up six runs on three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings of relief and took the loss.

Florida State looks for the sweep today at 1 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN3.
