Columbus State blanks Georgia College to finish sweep

After winning back-to-back slugfests, Columbus State won in a different way Sunday.

Brandon Koehler and Robert Hayes combined on a five-hitter as the Cougars finished a sweep of rival Georgia College 9-0 at Burger King Stadium.

Koehler started and went six innings to earn the win. He allowed five hits and three walks to go with seven strikeouts.

Hayes pitched the final three innings and allowed just one walk to go with three strikeouts.

CSU, which hit 10 home runs in the first two games, hit three more Sunday as Jackson Oliver, Mike McClellan and T. Fichter all hit home runs.

Blake Edwards drove in a pair of runs.

CSU won both of the first two games in the series in the 10th inning, 14-13 on Friday and 18-17 on Saturday.

CSU (20-4) has won eight straight. The Cougars are in first place in the Peach Belt Conference at 8-1. Lander (12-3), the second-place team, visits CSU for the start of a 3-game series at 6 p.m. Friday.

The Cougars also play a Tuesday game at Stillman at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Georgia 8, Lipscomb 2

Georgia finished a sweep of Lipscomb on Sunday with an 8-2 win at Foley Field in Athens, Ga.

Logan Moody led the way at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run.

Keegan McGovern had a pair of hits, including a two-run single.

Connor Jones started and went six shutout innings. He allowed two hits and walked three to go with eight strikeouts.

Georgia, which has won four straight to improve to 12-5, will play at Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Florida State 8, Georgia Tech 3

Four players had two RBIs each to lead Florida State to an 8-3 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.

The win gave the Seminoles a sweep in the opening series of the ACC schedule.

The Jackets entered the series having won each of its first 12 games.

In Sunday’s loss, Joey Bart went 3-for-4 and drove in all of the Jackets’ runs.

Ryan Peurifoy and Arden Pabst had two hits apiece.

The Jackets host Auburn for a single game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Alabama 7, Houston 6

Hunter Webb (Russell County High) knocked in two runs with a double as Alabama avoided a sweep by beating Houston 7-6 on Sunday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Webb’s double was part of a three-run third inning as the Tide took a 3-1 lead.

Dylan Duarte picked up the win as he pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in relief.

Alabama (11-4) will play at Southern Miss at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Auburn 18, Oral Roberts 11

Anfernee Grier (Russell County) hit a three-run homer as part of s seven-run sixth inning for Auburn in the Tigers’ 18-11 victory over Oral Roberts on Sunday at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala.

Grier also had a run-scoring single to finish the day 2-for-6 with four RBIs. The center fielder is leading the team in batting at .430.

Grier has had at least one hit in each of the 16 games this season.

The win gave Auburn the series two games to one.

The Tigers (8-8) play at Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
