College baseball roundup: Burks, Adkins lead CVCC to sweep
Chattahoochee Valley Community College got timely hitting and solid pitching Saturday to sweep a doubleheader 7-4 and 2-1 from Alabama Southern at Howard Lake Field.
In Game 1, Jalen Smith went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give CVCC a 3-1 lead.
A.J. Willoughby broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run double that made it 5-1.
Chase Burks (6-0) allowed four hits and struck out six over 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
In Game 2, Will Campbell went 2-for-4 including a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning that put the Pirates up 3-1.
Carson Hughes followed Campbell’s blast with a solo homer to extend the lead to 4-1.
Chase Adkins (5-1) picked up the win.
CVCC (19-8, 8-2 ACCC) plays Alabama Southern in a doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m. in Monroeville, Ala.
CVCC, which has won three straight, and L.B. Wallace are tied atop the ACCC South standings. Those two teams meet in late April.
Flagler 5-10, Columbus State 0-3
Flagler continued its red-hot play of late, sweeping Columbus State 5-0 and 10-3 on Friday in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
Flagler has won nine straight to improve to 17-11. The Saints are 6-8 in the PBC. CSU is 22-9 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
The Game 1 loss was the first time 17th-ranked CSU had been shutout since a 1-0 loss to UNC Pembroke on Feb. 17, 2013.
Mike O’Reilly (5-2) allowed the Cougars just five hits and two walks. He struck out six.
Ryan Ihle led the way for CSU with a pair of hits. Blake Edwards, Jackson Oliver and Mike McClellan had one apiece.
Caleb Kutsche (2-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Flagler jumped on CSU starter Albert Harless (3-2) for four runs in the first inning of Game 2. The Saints added three more in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.
The Cougars scored their first runs of the game in the seventh as McClellan doubled in Oliver. Matt Nettles hit a sacrifice fly to score another to cut the deficit to five, 7-2.
But the Saints answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Kolton Ingram.
Edwards doubled in a run for CSU in the eighth.
The team will finish the series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
North Carolina 8,
Georgia Tech 0
Georgia Tech managed just five hits and lost 8-0 to North Carolina on Friday night.
The five hits were a season-low for the Jackets, who had its streak of 10-plus hits stopped at six.
The Jackets (17-5, 4-4 ACC) also saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
J.B. Bukauskas gave up four hits and struck out 11 in eight innings to earn the win for the Tar Heels (19-3, 6-2). He retired 17 batters in a row at one point.
Tech’s best chance to score came in the second as the Jackets loaded the bases, but a line-out double play and a fly out ended the rally.
Georgia Tech beat North Carolina 3-2 in Thursday night’s series opener. Brandon Gold (3-1) earned the win after allowing just two runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings.
Arden Pabst and Kel Johnson had two hits apiece for the Jackets.
The final game of the series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Mississippi State 9, Georgia 2
In Thursday night’s series opener, Mississippi State won 9-2 as Reid Humphrey went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs.
His first home run was the first of seven straight hits in a 7-run fourth inning that gave Mississippi State an 8-1 lead.
Trevor Kieboom (CVCC) had an RBI single for Georgia.
The teams played Game 2 of the series late Friday night.
Alabama-Tennessee schedule change
With the forecast calling for rain on Sunday, the Tide and Volunteers moved up Sunday’s game to Saturday.
The teams will play a split doubleheader with the first game at 3 p.m. and the nightcap at 9 p.m.
