College baseball roundup: CVCC sweeps past Alabama Southern again

The Chattahoochee Valley baseball team swept Alabama Southern for the second straight day on Saturday. This time, it was 9-5 and 10-3 at Monroeville, Ala.

Christian Vann won Game 1 in relief of Jordan Lee. Vann blanked Alabama Southern for five innings on five hits.

Will Campbell went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, two doubles and four RBIs.

Carson Hughes went had a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Logan Haner won the second game. He started and gave up three runs in five innings.

Hughes went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

AJ Willoughby went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a double.

MJ Rookard hit a homer.

The Pirates, who have won five straight, are 21-8 overall and 10-2 in the ACCC South. They are a game ahead of L.B. Wallace, which is 8-2.

CVCC hosts Thomas University at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Flagler 5, Columbus State 1

The Columbus State baseball team forgot to pack its offense for a Peach Belt Conference series at Flagler. The Saints finished off a sweep with a 5-1 victory on Saturday at Drysdale Field in Flagler, Fla.

The Cougars entered the three-game series averaging just more than 10 runs a game. In the three losses, they managed just four.

CSU (22-10, 9-6) managed just five hits in Saturday’s loss. Jackson Oliver, Matt Nettles, Grant Berry, Hunter Bowling and Tyler Fichter had one hit apiece, all singles.

Flagler’s Dustin Dye (4-3) blanked the Cougars for six innings on three hits.

Brandon Koehler (6-1) allowed four runs — three earned — on seven hits in six innings.

The Saints (18-11, 7-8) have won 10 straight.

CSU will host Auburn-Montgomery at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Cougars’ next PBC series is next weekend at Georgia Southwestern.

Georgia 11, Mississippi State 8

Georgia avoided a sweep with an 11-8 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night at Polk-Dement Stadium in Starkville, Miss.

The Bulldogs scored three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to to take an 11-5 lead. They held on as Mississippi State scored three in the bottom of the ninth.

L. Talley led Georgia with a pair of hits, including a homer, and five RBIs. Skyler Weber went 4-for-6 with an RBI.

Trevor Kieboom (CVCC) went 2-for-3, including a home run.

The game took 4:52, the longest nine-inning game for both schools. Georgia’s longest was 4:56 in a 16-inning game in 2012.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak.

Georgia lost Game 2 of the series Friday night, 3-1.

Kieboom and Weber had two hits apiece.

Georgia (15-10, 2-4 SEC) will host Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Alabama 11, Tennessee 3

Alabama exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Tennessee 11-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Will Haynie hit a three-run homer and Cobie Vance doubled in two runs in the big inning, which turned a 4-2 lead into an 11-2 lead.

Hunter Webb (Russell County, CVCC) had both of his hits in the seventh.

Designated hitter Cody Henry had a pair of hits and four RBIs.

Jake Walters picked up the win, allowing one earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Alabama also won 7-3 on Friday night. Webb had a pair of hits and scored once. Chance Vincent drove in three runs.

Alabama (15-7, 4-1 SEC) and Tennessee (13-9, 1-4) played the final game of the series late Saturday night.

Georgia Tech 6, North Carolina 0

Zac Ryan and Burton Dulaney combined on a four-hitter as Georgia Tech beat North Carolina 6-0 on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Ryan (1-0) pitched six innings and allowed just two hits. Dulaney picked uop his second save as he pitched the final three innings. He also gave up a pair of hits.

Wade Bailey, Matt Gonzalez and Kel Johnson had three hits apiece for the Jackets (18-5, 5-4 ACC). Bailey and Johnson both hit homers.

The win gave Tech the 2-1 series win over the Tar Heels (19-4, 6-3).

Late Friday

Arkansas 3, Auburn 2

Luke Bonfield singled in Jake Alredge in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Arkansas a 3-2 win over Auburn on Friday night at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.

Auburn scored both of its runs in the third inning as Blake Logan doubled in a run and Daniel Robert singled in one.

Jordan Ebert, Niko Buentello and Logan had two hits apiece.

Anfernee Grier (Russell County) was held without a hit, but he reached base twice on walks. He has reached base in all 22 games this season.

The two teams played Game 2 of the series late Saturday night.
