College baseball roundup: CSU rallies past Armstrong; CVCC wins three

Columbus State scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to down Armstrong State 8-6 on Saturday night at Burger King.

Shortstop Ryan Ihle hit a two-run single in the eighth to drive in two runs to give CSU the lead. That was one of three hits he had.

Jackson Oliver and Hunter Bowling had two hits apiece. Mike McClellan hit a homer and drove in two runs.

Justin Evans (4-1) earned the win in relief. He got the final out in the top of the eighth then finished the game in the ninth.

Armstrong State’s JT Phillips (Columbus High) hit a solo homer. He also walked twice and scored another run.

CSU has won 11 straight to improve to 34-10 overall and 19-6 in the Peach Belt Conference. Armstrong State is 15-27 and 6-22.

The two teams finish the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday. Phillips is expected to start one of the game for Armstrong.

 

CVCC wins 35-11-6, Wallace Selma 2-1-1

Chattahoochee Valley scored three wins over Wallace State-Selma on Saturday afternoon at Howard Lake Stadium.

In the completion of a game that was suspended due to rain on Thursday, the Pirates routed Selma 35-2. In the regularly scheduled doubleheader, they won 11-1 and 6-1.

In the suspended game, Logan Haner picked up the win. AJ Willoughby hit a grand slam and finished with six RBIs. Frank Wager had a homer and four RBIs. Tim Kennedy and Tanner Davis drove in three runs apiece.

Jordan Lee picked up the second win. Will Campbell and Carson Hughes hit homers.

In the final game, Chase Adkins earned the win.

Willoughby and Hughes drove in two runs apiece.

CVCC (36-10, 21-3 ACCC South) plays at Chipola College at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Florida 4, Georgia 1

Georgia was limited to five hits and lost 4-1 to Florida on Saturday afternoon at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.

Peter Alonso hit a two-run homer for the Gators in the first inning. Florida scored single runs in the second and third innings.

Georgia didn’t get on the scoreboard until the ninth when pinch-hitter Patrick Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly.

First baseman Trevor Kieboom (CVCC) had one of Georgia’s five hits.

The win gave Florida the series win as the Gators also won 6-0 on Friday. Georgia had only two hits in the game.

Georgia (21-20, 7-11 SEC) hosts Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Florida (36-6, 13-5) is ranked No. 2.

 

Clemson 8,

Georgia Tech 7

Clemson rallied from five runs down and beat Georgia Tech 8-7 on Saturday in 10 innings.

The game was the completion of a game suspended due to rain Friday night.

The Jackets led 7-2 after scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning. Clemson scored five in the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers won the game with a run in the bottom of the 10th.

Connor Justus hit a home run as one of his three hits for the Jackets.

Game 2 of the series was played late Saturday night. The final game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.

 

Ole Miss 7, Auburn 4

Ole Miss built a five-run lead and went on to beat Auburn 7-4 on Saturday at Swayze Field in Oxford, Miss.

Ryan Olenek led the Rebels, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Melvin Gray led the Tigers with three hits. Jonathan Foster drove in a pair of runs.

Justin Camp took the loss, allowing six runs — three earned — on 10 hits and three walks in five innings.

Auburn’s Anfernee Grier (Russell County) went hitless in four at-bats.

Ole Miss beat Auburn 6-4 on Friday. Niko Buentello hit a homer and Grier went 2-for-5.

Auburn (18-20, 5-11 SEC) will try to avoid the sweep against Ole Miss at 2 p.m. Sunday.

 

Alabama 7, Texas A&M 4

Alabama shut out Texas A&M for the first innings and beat the Aggies 7-4 on Saturday at Blue Bell Park in College Station, Texas.

The Tide scored single runs in the second and fourth innings, three in the sixth and two in the ninth to take a 7-0 lead.

Alabama had to hang on as the Aggies scored four times in the bottom of the ninth.

Chandler Taylor hit a home run and a double and drove in two runs. Cody Henry had two doubles and two RBIs.

Jake Walters earned the win. He blanked the Aggies on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

In Friday’s series opener, Texas A&M scored a run in the 10th inning to down Alabama 4-3. Taylor hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Alabama (24-16, 9-8 SEC) and Texas A&M (31-8, 11-6) meet in Game 3 of the series at 2 p.m. Sunday.
