Colby Rasmus wins American League award
The Houston Astros’ Colby Rasmus was named the American League Player of the Week.
Rasmus (Russell County) batted. 316 with four home runs, five runs scored and 10 RBIs in six games last week.
He hit a grand slam in the Astros’ win over Boston on Saturday. He also hit a two-run shot in the ninth Sunday off Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel that forced the game into extra innings.
“It feels good putting the work in and trying to continue to stay up on what these pitchers are trying to do, and trying to help my team win ballgames and do good things,” Rasmus told Brian McTaggert of mlb.com. “I feel blessed.”
This is the second award for Rasmus, who won the National League Player of the Week in 2010 with the Cardinals.
Rasmus, who is batting .274, is tied with Josh Donaldson of the Blue Jays for the AL lead in home runs with seven. Rasmus is second in RBIs (18), slugging percentage (.661), on-base percentage (.418) and OPS (1.079).
