Sports briefs: Columbus State gains share of Peach Belt title

The Columbus State baseball team clinched at least a share of the Peach Belt Conference championship with an 11-5 win over UNC Pembroke on Friday night at Burger King Stadium.

The Cougars can win the title outright with a win in either of the final two games of the series. The teams play at 2 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Sunday.

This is the Cougars’ first PBC title since 2008.

Mike McClellan had a homer, a double and three RBIs. Justin Evans also hit a homer.

Christian Miller drove in a pair of runs.

CSU has won 16 straight, to improve to 38-10 and 22-6 in the PBC.

Smith hits walk-off homer as CVCC sweeps

The Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball team swept L.B. Wallace on Friday at Howard Lake Field, 8-2, 2-1.

Jaylen Smith hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh of Game 2 for the win.

Chase Adkins earned the win. He struck out nine in his seven innings.

Chase Burks earned the win in the opener, giving up two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Brandon Hill and Carson Hughes drove in two runs apiece. Smith had a pair of hits.

CVCC is 39-10 overall and 23-3 in the ACCC South. L.B. Wallace is 31-17 and 21-9.

The two teams play again today at 1 at L.B. Wallace.

Bama’s Davis resigns

Alabama defensive line coach Bo Davis has submitted his resignation, according to a statement released by head coach Nick Saban.

“Bo Davis has submitted his letter of resignation," Saban said in the statement released by the school's athletics communications department. "We appreciate all the contributions he made to the program and wish him and his family the very best in the future.”

The Tuscaloosa News reported Thursday that Davis was expected to resign or be fired from his job.

Davis’ contract at Alabama runs through 2017, and he is drawing a salary of $475,000 a year.

Saban hired Davis when he came to Tuscaloosa in 2007. Davis remained for four seasons before leaving for Texas, where he coached the defensive line in 2011-13. Davis returned to Alabama in 2014 and coached for two seasons.

Northgate sweeps Harris County

Northgate eliminated Harris County from the Class 5A playoffs with a pair of one-run wins on Friday.

Northgate scored the only run of Game 1 as Harris County made a pair of errors in the bottom of the first inning.

Justin Whipple pitched a complete game for Northgate. He gave up nine hits, three to Carter McKinstry.

In the nightcap, Northgate scored a run in the top of the eighth for the win.

The Tigers had rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth on Dustin Richardson’s two-run double.

Westside sweeps Jordan

Jordan managed just one hit in losing 8-1 in Game 1 to Westside-Augusta on Friday in their Class 3A series.

Westside finished the sweep 10-0 in Game 2.
