College baseball roundup: UNC Pembroke stops CSU’s 17-game win streak

The Columbus State baseball lost Sunday for the first time in more than a month, dropping a 10-9 decision to UNC Pembroke at Burger King Stadium.

The loss ended a 17-game winning streak, which was the longest in the nation.

The Cougars had rallied from a five-run deficit to take a 9-7 lead with four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth.

CSU took the lead on Blake Edwards’ three-run homer in the sixth.

But the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.

Pembroke’s Aleman Saba hit a two-run homer in the eighth to tie the game.

Then CJ White scored on a wild pitch in the ninth.

Kolton Ingram (2-2) suffered the loss. Robert Hayes threw the wild pitch.

Jackson Oliver, Christian Miller, Edwards and Tyler Fichter had two hits apiece for CSU.

 

Kentucky 9, Auburn 6

Kentucky avoided the series sweep with a 9-1 win over Auburn on Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala.

Javon Shelby hit two home runs and drove in four for the Wildcats (27-17, 11-10 SEC). Evan White had a pair of hits and three RBIs.

Damon Haecker had three hits and three RBIs for Auburn.

Anfernee Grier (Russell County) went 2-for-5.

The Tigers clinched the series win with their 10-6 win late Saturday night.

Grier drove in four, including three on a triple.

Auburn (20-24, 7-14) will open a series at Alabama at 8 p.m. Friday.

 

Vanderbilt 10, Georgia 3

Vanderbilt hit four home runs and finished a sweep of Georgia with a 10-3 win on Sunday at Foley Field in Athens, Ga.

Trevor Kieboom (CVCC) led Georgia with a career-high three hits.

Georgia (22-23, 7-14 SEC) hosts Ole Miss on Friday at 7 p.m.

 

Georgia Tech 9-4, Coastal Carolina 8-2

Jake Lee allowed just a pair of runs in six innings as Georgia Tech finished a sweep of Coastal Carolina with a 4-2 win Sunday in Atlanta.

The Jackets scored four runs in the ninth inning to win 9-8 in the first game Sunday. That game was the completion of a game that was suspended due to rain on Saturday.

The Jackets (30-14) open a series at Miami on Saturday at 8 p.m.

 

Mississippi State 2, Alabama 1

Alabama could manage just three hits in losing the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader 2-1 at Thomas-Sewell Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mississippi State (30-14-1, 12-9 SEC) scored a pair of runs in the second.

Alabama came back with a run in the sixth as Chance Vincent drove in a run.

The Tide had won the opener 4-3.

Alabama (25-20, 10-11) will host Auburn at 8 p.m. Friday.
