College baseball roundup: Tennessee rallies in ninth to edge Georgia

Tennessee scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past Georgia 5-4 on Friday afternoon at Fuley Field in Athens, Ga.

Georgia, which clinched a berth in the SEC tournament with a win over the Vols on Thursday, led 2-0 after scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Keegan McGovern scored on a passed ball, and LJ Talley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Dogs (27-28, 11-18 SEC) doubled the lead in the sixth. Patrick Sullivan doubled in a run, and Mitchell Webb added a sacrifice fly.

Tennessee (28-27, 8-21), which scored two runs in the sixth, loaded the bases to start the ninth on a single, a walk and a hit-batter. The first run scored on a passed ball, the next on a wild pitch and the final one on a sacrifice fly.

McGovern went 5-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs in Georgia’s 10-8 win over the Vols on Thursday.

The teams finish the series at noon Saturday. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.

 

Boston College at Georgia Tech, ppd.

The Boston College at Georgia Tech game, scheduled for Friday, was postponed due to rain at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.

The two teams will make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 is slated to start at noon.

Georgia Tech (35-18, 13-14 ACC) still needs one more win to clinch a berth in next week’s ACC tournament.

Matt Gonzalez and Brandt Stallings drove in two runs apiece for the Jackets in their 6-3 win over Boston College on Thursday.

 

Late Thursday

Vanderbilt 9, Auburn 3

Vanderbilt scored three runs in the first and went on to down Auburn 9-3 to finish a sweep on Thursday at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn.

With the threat of rain in the Nashville area on Friday, the teams moved up Friday’s game a day, creating a doubleheader. Vanderbilt won the first game 5-2.

Bryan Reynolds and Jeren Kendall hit homers for the Commodores in the 9-3 win.

Niko Buentello accounted for all three Auburn runs with a homer in the sixth inning.

Auburn is 23-32 overall and 8-21 in the SEC. The Tigers are tied with Tennessee for the 12th and final berth in the SEC tournament. Arkansas was 7-21 going into a Friday night game at Mississippi State.

Auburn and Vanderbilt finish their series at 3 p.m. Saturday.

South Carolina 6, Alabama 4

Alabama battled back from a four-run deficit but fell to South Carolina 6-4 on Thursday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Gamecocks led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Tide (31-22, 15-13 SEC) score four times to tie the game. Cobie Vance hit a two-run homer, and Cody Henry hit a two-run single to tie the game.

But South Carolina scored two runs in the sixth and held on for the win.

Game 2 of the series was played late Friday night.

The series will conclude with a game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
