Burks, Campbell lead CVCC to rout of San Jacinto in JUCO World Series

The Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning en route to a 13-3 victory over San Jacinto on Thursday night in the JUCO World Series.

Those runs were more than enough for Chase Burks, who picked up his second win the series and 14th this season.

The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in seven innings.

Will Campbell provided the big blow in the second.

The left-fielder hit a three-run homer to cap the scoring in the frame. Nolan Greckel also drove in two with a single.

San Jacinto scored three in the third, but CVCC got all of those runs back in the top of the fourth.

Again, Campbell delivered, this time with a two-out triple that scored Greckel. Carson Hughes and JT Thomas added run-scoring singles as CVCC build the lead back to seven, 10-3.

AJ Willoughby hit a two-run homer in the sixth for a 12-3 lead.

Tim Kennedy knocked in a run on a ground out in the seventh, giving the Pirates (52-11) a 10-run lead.

Campbell finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Greckel went 3-for-3.

Jayson Cook, Willoughby and Thomas had two hits apiece.

There are now three teams left — each has one loss — in the double-elimination tournament. Per JUCO rules, the team that has played the most number of games , Yavapai with five, receives a bye to Saturday.

That leaves CVCC and San Jacinto, which have played four apiece, to play again Friday night at 9. The winner will face Yavapai in the final game.
