CVCC falls one game shy of playing for JUCO World Series title
The Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball team came up just one game short of the JUCO World Series title game after losing 8-1 to San Jacinto on Friday night.
San Jacinto left-hander Devin Smeltzer struck out 20 batters as he pitched a complete game with 140 pitches.
That was one shy of the world series record shared by a pair of Paris (Texas) pitchers Len Bell in 1959 and Floyd Weaver in 1961.
The Pirates managed just two hits off Smeltzer.
JT Thomas got a two-out single to left field in the second.
Jaylen Smith got a single in the fifth, which drove in Frank Wager, who had singled and went to second on a passed ball.
Chase Adkins took the loss, his second of the world series. He allowed eight runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Nick Shumpert went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead San Jacinto.
CVCC ends its season at 52-12. The Pirates went 3-2 in the world series. They beat Harford 10-2 and 14-11 and San Jacinto 13-3. Their previous loss was 8-0 to Iowa Western.
San Jacinto plays Yavapai at 9 p.m. Saturday for the world series championship.
This is San Jacinto’s 21st trip to the JUCO World Series, and its 14th trip to the championship game. San Jacinto has won the title five times.
