College baseball roundup: Auburn rallies but falls short
Auburn scored runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t recover from an early deficit in a 4-3 loss on Saturday at Missouri.
Former Russell County star Anfernee Grier went 1-for-5 with a run scored in the game, and Jackson Burgreen went 3-for-3.
The Tigers got their runs on an RBI groundout by Kyler Deese, a sacrifice fly from Niko Buentello, his team-best 38th RBI of the year, and an RBI single by Cody Nulph.
Andrew Mitchell took the loss in the game, allowing three runs on four hits in just over four innings of work.
Michael Plassmeyer got the win for Missouri.
Auburn is 15-17 overall and 3-9 in SEC play.
Kentucky 6, Alabama 2
Kentucky’s Riley Mahan knocked a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday to knock off Alabama 6-2.
The win gave the No. 19 Wildcats the series and dropped Alabama to 18-13 overall this season and 5-6 in SEC play.
Kentucky loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth before the Crimson Tide brough on Jon Keller to try to preserve the tie game. He struck out the first batter he faced before allowing the homer to Mahan.
Alabama’s Will Haynie had just knocked a two-out home run in the top of the ninth to even the score.
Alabama scored its first run in the third inning after former Russell County star Hunter Webb led off the inning with a single and moved to second on an error. One out later, a passed ball moved Webb to third, and an error on a grounder by Cobie Vance brought him in.
Former Russell County star Ray Castillo took the loss on the mound. The Tide and Wildcats finish the series at 1 p.m. Sunday in Lexington.
Texas A&M 15, Georgia 1
No. 3 Texas A&M easily dispatched of Georgia 15-1 on Saturday in the second game of a weekend series in College Station, Texas.
The Aggies scored runs in six of the nine innings, including four each in the fifth and eighth. They had five home runs on the day, two from Hunter Melton and one each from Nick Banks, Boomer White and Ryne Birk.
Georgia scattered nine hits in the game, including two from Skyler Weber and Keegan McGovern, but had no extra-base hits. Patrick Sullivan drove in the lone run of the game. Former CVCC star Trevor Kieboom went 1-for-2 in the game.
Connor Jones took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs, while Jace Vines got the win for Texas A&M. He pitched eight innings and allowed just one run, while striking out seven.
Georgia is 17-15 overall and 4-7 in SEC play.
The teams finish the series at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.
