College baseball roundup: Ole Miss knocks Georgia out of SEC tournament
J.B. Woodman tripled, doubled and drove in three runs Tuesday as No. 7 seed Mississippi defeated No. 10 seed Georgia 5-1 in the first round of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
Ole Miss (41-16) will face No. 2 seed South Carolina (42-13) on Wednesday as the tournament moves to double-elimination play. Georgia (27-30) was eliminated.
Woodman hit a two-run triple and Colby Bortles doubled home two more runs as Ole Miss took the lead for good by scoring four times in the fourth inning. Woodman doubled home Will Golsan in the fifth.
Georgia had taken a 1-0 lead on Stephen Wrenn’s homer in the first.
Brady Feigl, Will Stokes and Wyatt Short combined for five innings of shutout relief after Brady Bramlett allowed one run in four innings. Georgia starter Heath Holder yielded four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Georgia hasn’t won an SEC tournament game since 2011.
Vanderbilt 7, Missouri 0
Patrick Raby and two other pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout Tuesday as No. 6 seed Vanderbilt defeated No. 11 seed Missouri 7-0 in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
Vanderbilt (42-15) faces No. 3 seed Texas A&M (41-13) on Wednesday as the tournament moves to double-elimination play. Missouri (26-30) was eliminated.
The Commodores have won all 14 of their all-time meetings with Missouri.
Missouri’s Tanner Houck kept the game scoreless until Vanderbilt broke through with four runs in the sixth. Bryan Reynolds opened the scoring with a two-run double, and Vanderbilt added two unearned runs later in the inning.
Julian Infante hit a two-run homer as Vanderbilt broke the game open with three runs off Austin Tribby in the eighth.
Raby allowed two hits in six innings. Collin Snider gave up one hit in two innings of relief and Donny Everett allowed one hit in the ninth.
Alabama 5, Kentucky 2
Will Haynie hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday to give Alabama some breathing room in a 5-2 win over Kentucky at the Southeastern Conference tournament.
Alabama (32-24) faces No. 1 seed Miss. State (40-14-1) on Wednesday. Kentucky was eliminated.
Alabama took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning before Kentucky (32-25) chipped away with single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.
Nick Eicholtz (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits over 6 2/3 innings and got the win. Zach Logue (3-2) gave up three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings and took the loss.
ACC
Georgia Tech 6, Boston College 0
Matt Gonzalez, Trevor Craport and Tristin English each homered Tuesday as Georgia Tech eliminated Boston College 6-0 to advance to pool play at the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament.
English went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs. Tech (36-20) scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. They added three more in the top of the ninth. It was the fourth game in six days between the two teams, who finished up the regular season over the weekend. B.C. took two of three in Atlanta.
Brandon Gold (8-3) spread seven hits over 6 2/3 innings and picked up the win. Jesse Adams gave up two runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings and he took the loss for Boston College (31-20).
No. 9 seed Tech faces No. 1 Miami in the first game of pool play on Wednesday.
