MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Columbus State broke what was a close game against Montevallo wide open in the eighth inning Friday, helping the Cougars emerge with a 14-5 triumph on the road.
Columbus State (27-11, 12-10 PBC) held a 7-5 lead after seven innings of play. But the Cougars doubled that up in the eighth inning alone, scoring the final seven runs of the contest. Caleb Kutsche improved to 5-0 this season after tossing six and two-thirds innings. He allowed Montevallo (18-19, 10-12) to score five runs, four of them earned, but he also notched seven strikeouts.
Brendan Collins was the Cougars' star at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs and scoring two runs. He also had Columbus State's only home run, belting a two-run shot.
Game 2 of the three-game series is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday.
