5 Columbus State soccer players score in 6-2 win over Lander
Olivia Jarrell scored two goals and four other CSU players added goals Tuesday to lead Columbus State to a 6-2 win over Lander in the Peach Belt Conference tournament quarterfinals.
Lander (7-8-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Fayla Junior crossed the ball into the box and Sara Flores headed it in the net just 50 seconds into the match. Lander made it 2-0 at 13:17 when Junior made a 30-yard run to the box and put the ball in the top of the net.
Columbus State (16-2-1), defending conference champions, pulled to within 2-1 at 14:56 when Nicole Corcione took a cross from Chelsea Person and scored. It was Corcione's 13th goal of the season.
Jarrell brought the match level at 2-2 from 15 yards out after getting an assist from Taylor Marks. Her two goals now give her 13 on the year.
CSU took the lead 3-2 at 35:06 when Claire Belay took her own rebound and drove the ball into the top left corner of the goal. It was Belay's third goal of the season.
The Lady Cougars went up 4-2 on a set play at 56:59, when Marks received the corner kick from Shelby Rolling and hit the net. It was Marks sixth goal of the season.
Stephanie Kolwicz scored her first goal the season on a penalty kick at 68:46 to put CSU up 5-2.
CSU closed out the scoring at 72:16 when Kolwicz hit Jarrell with a long pass and Jarrell finished off the goal from three yards out.
Lander had only two shots all match. They scored on both, but the CSU defense denied them opportunities after the early goals. CSU finished with 19 shots and 11 shots were on goal.
In other quarterfinal matches Tuesday, Armstrong State defeated Clayton State 2-1 in overtime and North Georgia defeated Flagler 2-1. The UNC Pembroke-Georgia College match was postponed until today at 3 p.m.
The semifinals and final will be played Friday and Sunday at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga. CSU will face the winner of the UNC-Pembroke-Georgia College match Friday at 11 a.m. Armstrong State will face North Georgia at 2 p.m. The final is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
