Mitchell's late jumper lifts CSU to 77-75 win over All-Army squad
Michelle Mitchell hit a jumper with one second left Thursday night to lift Columbus State to a 77-75 win over the All-Army basketball team at the Lumpkin Center.
Mitchell scored 34 points to help CSU State rally from an 8-point halftime deficit. Mitchell was 14-of-20 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the exhibition game. Mitchell also pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars.
The teams battled to 20-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Juliette Turner scored 19 points for the All-Army team and helped Army build a 46-38 lead at the half. Kim Smith and Jennifer Hazlett each had 10 points for the Army squad.
CSU outscored Army 21-12 in the third period to take 59-58 lead.
The teams exchanged leads late in the game. Army's Shantoria Basley hit a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left to tie the game at 75. Mitchell later grabbed a rebound with four seconds left. After a time out, she hit her game winner.
CSU's Ashley Asouzu had 12 rebounds and two blocks and Gabby Williams scored 10 points in the game. Brea Walker had eight points.
Columbus State opens the regular season Nov. 13 against Fort Valley State at 7 p.m. in the Lumpkin Center.
