Olivia Jarrell scores twice as Columbus State wins Southeast Regional
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Columbus State scored three second-half goals and routed Carson-Newman 4-1 on Friday afternoon to win the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
With the win, the third-ranked Lady Cougars advance to the national quarterfinals. The match against fourth-ranked Barry will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday.
"I don't think either team played their best today, but we took care of our chances when we had them," CSU coach Jay Entlich said in a news release. "Carson-Newman is really well-coached and now we have a quick turnaround against a good Barry team."
The Southeast Regional championship is the second straight for CSU and fourth overall. The Lady Cougars also win 2007 and '08. They are 0-3 in the quarterfinal round.
Cassandra Wade gave CSU (20-2-1) an early lead with a goal in the 14th minute. Her header deflected off a defender into the goal.
Carson-Newman (19-3), the regional's top seed and the host, tied the match in the 68th minute as Varin Ness took a crossing pass and scored.
Less than five minutes later, freshman Olivia Jarrell's shot was stopped by the Carson-Newman keeper. But Nicole Corcione, the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, scored on the rebound.
CSU keeper made a big save less than a minute later to keep the lead at 2-1.
Jarrell put CSU ahead 3-1 with her goal at 79:51. It was the 15th goal of the season for the PBC Freshman of the Year.
She scored again at 88:13 to complete the scoring.
Parsons made nine saves in net for the Lady Cougars to earn her 19th victory.
Barry beat Tampa 1-0 in the South Regional championship game, which was played just prior to the CSU-Carson-Newman match at McCown Field. Sunday's match will be played at McCown.
