Carson-Newman storms back to hand Columbus State women their first loss

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman outscored Columbus State 17-6 over the final 6:34 to take a 70-68 victory on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

Carson-Newman (4-0) forced a turnover by sixth-ranked Columbus State with the score tied at 68-68.

The Eagles got a shot off that missed, but it went off a CSU player. On the inbounds play, CSU was called for a foul. Katie Stubblefield hit both free throws to five the Eagles the 70-68 lead with 3.4 seconds left.

Michelle Mitchell got a clean look at a game-tying basket, but it rolled off the rim.

"This is a tough loss on the road against one of the best teams in our region," CSU coach Jonathan Norton said in a news release. "We did not defend the 3 or rebound well enough to win.

"We gave ourselves a chance leading for 38 minutes, but we did not execute well enough down the stretch to finish."

Mitchell finished with 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Ashley Asouzu added 15 and Eryn Cochran had 10.

CSU (3-1) will play at Tuskegee on Dec. 5.
