Lady Cougars fall to Young Harris 55-51

The Columbus State Lady Cougars suffered a nearly seven-minute scoring drought from which they were unable to fully recover, losing to Young Harris 55-51 on Sunday afternoon.

The 23rd-ranked Lady Cougars led 21-15 with 5:58 left in the second quarter when they went ice cold from the floor. CSU missed its last eight shots of the first half and also committed a turnover.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mountain Lions scored the final 15 points of the second quarter to take a 30-21 lead into intermission.

Keta Robinette sparked Young Harris, which broke a seven-game losing streak with the win, by hitting three straight 3-pointers to start the 15-0 run.

CSU coach Jonathan Norton was clearly frustrated after the game with his team's defense.

"We have specific principals we are supposed to follow," he said.

The Lady Cougars, who have now lost 3 of its last four, played catchup the entire second half. But they were never able to catch Young Harris.

Gabby Williams finally broke CSU's drought with a 3-pointer 50 second into the third quarter.

Michelle Mitchell got CSU to within one, 42-41, with a basket at the 8:21 mark of the fourth quarter. But Sara Jorgensen responded with a 3-pointer to expanded the Young Harris back out to four, 45-41.

CSU was unable to get closer than three points the rest of the way.

" I am very embarrassed by our performance today," Norton said. "It was a real frustrating afternoon to say the least."

Mitchell led CSU with 12 points, more than eight below her average. Williams was the only other CSU player to reach double figures with 10.

Meredith Tarver paced Young Harris with 16. Robinette had 12 as she made 4-of-4 from 3-point range.

CSU will host Flagler on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Lumpkin Center.
