Cam Baker named Peach Belt Conference men's basketball Player of the Week

Columbus State guard Cam Baker was named the Peach Belt Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Baker, a Kendrick alum, averaged 31 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games.

He made 19-of-33 shots from the field (57.6 percent) and 3-of-6 from 3-point range.

Baker scored 30 points in a loss against Lander. On Sunday, he scored 32 points as CSU rallied past Young Harris.

He is fourth in the PBC in scoring at 21.2 points per game.

CSU hosts Flagler on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

CSU's Mike McClellan named to NCBWA All-Southeast Region team

Columbus State slugger Mike McClellan was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Southeast Region team, it was announced Monday.

McClellan was named to the first team as a designated hitter.

The senior batted .356 with 16 homers and 63 RBIs last season.

CSU opens the season Feb. 5 at Erskine.

CVCC Pirates ranked fourth in 2016 NJCAA Div. I pre-season poll

The Chattahoochee Valley Pirates are receiving favorable predictions in preseason polls.

The Pirates, who have been to the JUCO World Series two seasons in a row, are ranked fourth in the 2016 NJCAA Division I preseason poll.

The Pirates are behind Northwest Florida State, McLennan and Walters State.

CVCC is also the favorite to return to the JUCO World Series. In a vote among ACCC coaches, the Pirates were picked to finish first by 11 of the 17 coaches.

The Pirates open the 2016 season Friday with a doubleheader in Panama City, Fla., against Talahassee Community College at 3 p.m., followed by a game at Gulf Coast State at 5:30 p.m.
